The Holy Roman Empire

The Holy Roman Empire was formed by Otto the first, Otto became the duke of Saxony and king of Germany in 936 AD, he quickly united his dukes and made them his vassals (Vassals are dukes who are loyal to the king, In 951 AD Otto heard of another way of increasing his kingdom which was that the Widow Queen of Italy was in danger from her oppressors and then rescued her which then crowned him king and married the Queen of Italy, In 955 AD Otto was invaded by the Magyars/Hungarians, Otto managed to defeat the Magyars but at a cost him three of his most important members of his family was killed, including his son which was to be his heir, which then Otto named his two year old son Adelaide and made his new heir, the defeat of the Magyars allowed Otto to conquer and expand his country East, which also allowed Christianity to spread towards the East, Pope John the twelfth got into trouble and called Otto for help, Otto agreed to help but that he would get the title the “Holy Roman Emperor”, In 962 AD Otto crushed a rebellion of the Papal States and was crowned Emperor, The Holy Roman Empire then became a perpetual title for the region of Germany all the way until Napoleon around 1806 AD, and in 989 AD the Catholic Church proposed The Pax Dei/Peace of God as proper guidelines for conducting warfare, it was not very effective, but it set the precedents for controlling the noble’s violence
